Lyrebird Mimics Every Thing - BBC Video

Amazing! This animal can imitate the call of at least 20 different bird species but that’s nothing compared to the fact that it can mime the sound made by photo camera shutters, car alarms or even saws and chainsaws.

The Superb Lyrebird (Menura Novaehollandiae) is a pheasant-sized songbird, up to 100 cm long, with brown upper body plumage, grayish brown below, rounded wings and strong legs. It is the longest and third heaviest of all songbirds.

Yet another reason to hate cats, they are a huge threat to the survival of this amazing bird.

it’s kinda sad the bird is imitating the sound of its own impending doom. :(

Aussie birds copy because they are too lazy to invent their own sound.

This actually supports evolution, you fool. The bird is LEARNING or EVOLVING more sounds. God didn’t give him those sounds, moron.

Abdullah and Orion, you are both idiots. I’m glad you support evolution, Orion, but you don’t seem to understand what it is.

I am a believer! Here n the mid-USA, we have mockingbirds which migrate somewhat South for colder weather. One summer night, I was up very late doing paper-work,and had just turned off the radio. I heard the mockingbird making its warbling imitation of ALL the other birds in the neighborhood. I was very happy & the bird may have been attempting to mislead all the neighborhood cats.
~The cats ARE quite detrimental to the young birds(!)
Anyway, after doing some beautiful renditions of birds whose songs and sounds were very recognizable, the mockingbird attempted the whip’por-Will. It could make most of its desirable syllables; but, did sort of “boggle” at the latter part! It tried several times…still imperfect!
~I have never heard it TRY the whipporwill’s song again.
BTW, as the bird doesn’t “sing” all night very often, one has to figure that there IS a purpose to that. He was on each side of our house/yard. There are lots of trees and smaller shrubs. They DO like to sit in the lilac bushes to sing, too, as the lyrics of an old song ballad suggests.

I think it also makes the sound of two drops falling into the water …in the last 10 seconds ..after the chainsaw one.

That was Sir David Attenborough for the BBC. He’s been doing this for 40 years. There’s no way that this is fake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough

You doubters out there are just that…if Rich Little can impersonate most ANY voice, why not a bird?
This is one of the gifts of nature, one of God’s creatures.
    Amazing.

I’m an aussie and the fact that this bird can copy any sound is well known. It can imitate chainsaws and many various sounds. i’v heard one imitate my car back firing xD. the fact that it sounds so real does make people doubt the Authenticity of this amazing creature but it is real and it does do that.. come camping in the South Aussie bush and u will hear it… Truly Remarkable
